Getting up in the attic is not something that most of us spend a lot of time thinking about, but some home designers choose a way to do so that is meant to save on space in the home. By using an attic pull-down ladder, space doesn’t need to be wasted with a staircase, but there are some pull-down ladders that are either installed wrong or not strong enough for safe use.
It is important to realize that the hinge where the ladder folds is a weak spot, so it shouldn’t have too much pressure on it when the ladder is used. This could happen if the ladder is too long and at an inappropriate angle.
The ladder needs to be firmly attached in between the wooden studs in your attic, and the screws attaching it should be long enough to hold the weight of a person as well as items that are being carried.
If you want to use the ladder safely, you should climb it first and then have someone hand you items so you can just put them inside of the attic without having to climb the ladder carrying them.
