If there is a wildfire near your home, do you think it would burn your home down or would it pass by with little damage to the building? While you can never have full control over these things, there is a method called utilizing defensible space that can help protect your home against natural disasters of many kinds. The idea is to avoid having anything near the home that could serve as fuel for a fire or be tossed by heavy winds to damage your home.
In the area about 15 feet out from your home, there shouldn’t be anything growing. Bushes and trees should be cut down. Between 15 and 100 feet out everything should be closely trimmed, but you could have some smaller trees and bushes that are well trimmed.
In the area outside of that you can let things grow more freely, but still somewhat controlled.
While keeping it this way might not produce the prettiest yards, the safety of your home will be increased greatly.
