Hot water can be very harmful. This is especially the case for young children and older ones. They have more sensitive skin, and they might not react as quickly as they need to. Water that is at 160 degrees will scald skin in seconds, and some homeowners have their water heater set that high (this is not recommended, but that’s the subject of a different blog post). This is why anti-scald valves are so important. They mix the incoming hot and cold water to get it to a safe temperature. It also prevents sudden fluctuations in the water temperature when a faucet is opened up somewhere else in a home, or when a toilet is flushed. That is a common problem in older homes, but an anti-scald valve could be retrofitted to lessen the risk of this happening.
Even if you aren’t in the risk groups for getting seriously harmed by hot water, it is never pleasant to have a scalding hot surprise.
