If you want to fill up your tub, you most likely use a tub stopper to keep the water from draining out. There are many different designs, but the most common is a lever that moves a plunger up and down a channel to cut off and open up the water flow. There is a possibility that this plunger becomes unhooked and prevents your tub from draining. While this is a pain, it is not very difficult to fix. The first step is to remove the plate around the lever to gain access to the channel below. Be careful so as not to lose the screws down the drain. You can place a cover over it to be safe.
Next, you can fish the plunger out using a wire hanger or something similar. After you reattach the chain from the lever to the plunger, you might need to readjust the length of the chain for it to function properly.
