The stairs in your home could become a lethal trap! If you think that sounds sensationalistic, it is something that is backed up by statistics. Thousands die from falling down a flight of stairs every year in this country alone. Unfortunately, there are 2 vulnerable groups that are more likely to have a fall down a flight of stairs, and that is older ones and young children.
What can you as a homeowner do to minimize the risk of becoming part of the statistics? Well, if you have either of those two at-risk age groups in your home, you should block access to the stairs. For children, it might be enough with a gate, but for older ones, you might need to install a door to prevent them from injury.
You should also make sure your stairs are in good repair. A loose carpet or handrail could easily cause someone to trip or be unable to regain their balance in your stairs. Take care of these issues as soon as possible.
