One very important thing that you can do for your long-term health is drinking a lot of water. So many of your body’s systems rely on water to function properly and being dehydrated can seriously hurt your health. Of course, having smelly water is not going to make you more likely to want to drink a tall glass. While odors coming from your water supply can be disconcerting, it usually isn’t a good indication of whether the water is good for drinking or not. In fact bacteria and chemicals that are harmful to you often don’t have an odor.
A common smell, when you are connected to a municipal water system, is that of chlorine. Chlorine is added to the water supply to kill off bacteria that could be harmful to your health, but chlorine in itself is also harmful, just not in the low dose that you get from your drinking water.
A way to lower the amount of chlorine in your water is to have an activated coal filter installed.
If you smell rotten eggs, this is possibly hydrogen sulfide. This is a very strong-smelling chemical, so the fact that you are smelling it doesn’t mean that there is a large enough concentration in your water to harm you.
