Walking across a wooden floor, can you tell whether or not it is solid hardwood or if it is engineered flooring? Engineered flooring consists of a thin layer of hardwood that is glued on the top of plywood to create a material that looks exactly like hardwood floor but at a much more affordable cost. While some might feel like this isn’t as good as the real thing, the price tag should be enough to convince most people.
Engineered flooring also has the additional benefit of being much more versatile than traditional wood flooring. You can, for example, use many different methods for fastening the flooring, while hardwood flooring only should be fastened using nails or staples.
So, are there any downsides to using engineered flooring? Well, for one thing, you have to be even more careful of scratches than with a wood floor, since the thin layer of hardwood isn’t deep enough to handle deep scratches. It is difficult to make repairs of the floor look good if the scratch is deep enough to penetrate the top layer.
